International Film Festival to be held in Janakpur from Falgun 16
February 5,Kathmandu.The first Janakpur International Film Festival is being held with the aim of internationalizing the Nepali film industry, promoting the market, and exploring potential and opportunities.
The Samvad Foundation announced that it will hold its first film festival from February 16 to 18 in Lalitpur on Tuesday, in the presence of filmmakers and media personnel.
At the event, Film Development Board Chairman Dinesh DC expressed his belief that the festival will be an important medium to market Nepali and Mithila films to the world. “Janakpur represents Mithila region, the festival will highlight it. More than 137 countries of the world will know about our films,” he said.
Chairman DC said that it is not appropriate to hold festivals with the aim of making money and expressed his commitment to support such international film festivals by cutting budgets from other sectors.
Dharmendra Jha, executive chairman of the National News Committee (NRC), stressed the need to change the process of Nepali cinema production. He expressed his belief that the festival would inspire Nepali filmmakers to explore local stories and would also be of great help in sustainable and internationalizing Nepali cinema in the future.
Actress Rekha Thapa said that Mithila is the mother of civilization, art, and women, and the festival will highlight that importance.
Producer Madhav Wagle complained that they are facing problems in making a film that includes the story of the Mithila region because it is too expensive to depict the Mithila civilization.
Film director Subarna Thapa emphasized that the festival should connect the Himalayas, hills, and Terai and include children, youth, and women.
JIFF is being organized with the aim of internationalizing Nepali films, motivating young filmmakers and promoting cultural diversity, informed Kumar Bhaskar, head of Sambad Foundation. He informed that they are on a campaign to establish Nepal on the international film stage, including explaining the importance of films in Nepal, presenting Nepali films to the world, providing inspiration and opportunities to Nepali youth.
