February 6,Kathmandu.Violence erupted again in several cities in Bangladesh late Wednesday night ahead of the Awami League's proposed nationwide protests. Protesters vandalized and set fire to the residence of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman 'Bangabandhu', father of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in Dhanmandi-32, Dhaka.
Similarly, protesters in Khulna demolished the houses of Sheikh Hasina's uncles Sheikh Sohail and Sheikh Jewel with two bulldozers. The violence broke out after a 'bulldozer rally' was announced on social media. Security personnel were also present at the time of the attack. Efforts were made to persuade the crowd to leave, but all efforts failed, media reports said.
Some protesters have also entered the residence and the museum. They have reportedly climbed onto balconies and vandalized the house, and even set it on fire. Videos and photos of the incident are going viral on social media.
Why did the violence break out?
Sheikh Hasina's party, Awami League, had appealed to its workers and leaders to take to the streets on February 6. The party had called for the registration of an alleged case against former Prime Minister Hasina and for a rally to protest attacks on minorities.
It has been six months since Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh yesterday, Wednesday. Sheikh Hasina was scheduled to address her supporters online at 9 pm.
Earlier, a student organization called '24 Revolutionary Students-People' had announced to hold a 'Bulldozer March' at 9 pm in protest. This was advertised on social media. It was said that Sheikh Hasina's father's house would be demolished, but the protesters reached Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's house in Dhanmandi-32 at 8 pm and started demolishing it.
'Hang Sheikh Hasina' slogan
The protesters broke into the main gate of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's house and entered. They chanted slogans like "Hang him, hang him. Hang Sheikh Hasina." The protesters said that Mujibur Rahman's house was a "bastion of fascists" and needed to be removed. Agency
