February 23,Kathmandu.Dates are a very nutritious and tasty dry fruit. The fiber, iron, potassium and vitamins present in it help in keeping the body energetic and healthy. There are many benefits of eating dates daily. It strengthens the bones and digestive system and also keeps the heart healthy.

According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, dates have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, gastroprotective and anti-cancer properties. Studies also suggest that antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavonoids present in dates reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Which nutrients are found in dates?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), dates contain many nutrients like carbohydrates, fiber, protein, vitamin B, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc and manganese.

How beneficial are dates for health?

Dates contain almost all the essential nutrients, which are beneficial for overall health. The antioxidants present in it help in removing bad cholesterol from artery cells. At the same time, potassium and magnesium keep the heart healthy.

Apart from this, eating dates makes the stomach feel full for a long time, which reduces the desire to eat. In this way, dates are also helpful in reducing weight.

Dates are rich in fiber, which strengthens the digestive system. It is also an excellent source of iron, which fulfills the deficiency of blood in the body. The calcium, phosphorus and magnesium present in it strengthens the bones and muscles.

Does eating dates sharpen the brain?

Nutritionist Dr. says that eating dates keeps the brain fresh. It contains many nutrients, which are beneficial for the brain. Dates contain natural sugars like glucose and fructose, which relieve mental stress and keep the brain more active.

What is the correct way to eat dates?  

The right time to eat dates is on an empty stomach in the morning. For this, soak the dates in water at night and eat them on an empty stomach in the morning. Eating them after soaking in water makes it easier to digest. However, dry dates can also be eaten. Apart from this, dates can also be eaten with milk at night.

How many dates should one eat in a day?

Dr.says that eating two to three dates every day is enough to provide the body with the necessary nutrients. If the digestive system is good then you can eat 4-5 dates. But you should not eat more than this.

 How to include dates in your diet?

Dates can be included in your diet in many ways. Understand this with the pointers below-

  • Put 2-3 dates in milk and boil it well. After this, drink it.
  • Dates can also be eaten by mixing them with porridge, kheer and oats.
  • You can also add dates instead of sugar in halwa.
  • You can make a smoothie by mixing dates with banana.
  • You can also make laddus by mixing dates with other dry fruits.

Can diabetic patients also eat dates?

Dr. says that dates contain natural sugar. Its glycemic index (GI) is low, due to which it does not allow the blood sugar level to increase suddenly. Therefore, diabetic patients can also eat it. However, they must consult a doctor once before eating dates.

Are dates beneficial for children?

Dr. says that dates are very beneficial for children too. It gives them energy and helps in their growth. However, feeding them in excess can be harmful. Therefore, pay special attention to the quantity. Children should not be given more than one or two dates in a day.

Can eating too many dates be harmful?

Although dates are beneficial for health, but excess of anything is bad. In such a situation, eating too many dates can also be harmful. It can cause problems like increased blood sugar level, skin rashes, restlessness, lack of sleep, weight gain, excessive sweating, indigestion.

Apart from this, eating too many dates can immediately cause symptoms like stomach cramps and diarrhea.

Which people should not eat dates?

Dr.  says that people suffering from diarrhea, kidney disease, obesity and acidity should avoid eating dates. Apart from this, small children, pregnant women and people who have undergone surgery a few days ago should not eat dates without consulting a doctor.
