December 31,Kathmandu ,The problem of mood swings and depression (Winter Blues) increases in the winter season. Due to less sunlight, mood changes occur which are called winter blues or SAD. Yoga can be very helpful in getting relief from these because yoga helps in improving the mood. Let us know some yogasanas to get relief from winter blues.

Lifestyle Desk, Kathmandu Yoga for Winter Blues: As soon as the winter season arrives, many people have to face problems like sadness, fatigue and mood swings. This is called Winter Blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Due to less sunlight and cold, the level of serotonin in the body decreases, which causes these problems. However, due to less sunlight, everyone faces this problem to some extent, but some people can be more affected by it. Yoga can prove to be very effective in dealing with winter blues. Let us know about 5 yogasanas that can help in removing winter blues.

Surya Namaskar

Surya Namaskar is a yoga asana that activates the entire body. It increases blood circulation in the body, strengthens muscles and reduces stress. Surya Namaskar is an excellent option to deal with depression caused by lack of sunlight.

Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)

Bhujangasana makes the spine flexible and strengthens the abdominal organs. It helps in reducing stress and improving mood. People often feel tired in winters , Bhujangasana helps in removing this fatigue.

Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)

Trikonasana makes the body flexible and improves balance. It helps in reducing stress and anxiety. Apart from this, it increases blood circulation in the body , which makes you feel more energetic.

Shavasana (Corpse Pose

Shavasana is a relaxing posture. It helps in reducing stress and relaxing the body. By doing this asana, you will feel mentally calm and stress-free.

Udgeetha Pranayam

Udgith Pranayama is a breathing technique. Doing this calms the mind and reduces stress. It also helps in improving sleep. Insomnia is often a problem in winters, Udgith Pranayama helps in dealing with this problem.

  • To avoid winter blues, you can do these things along with yoga-

  • Sit in the sun- Sitting in the sun for some time every day increases the level of Vitamin D in the body, which helps in improving the mood.
  • Take a healthy diet- Eating fruits, vegetables and nuts will strengthen your immune system and you will fall sick less often.
  • Get enough sleep- It is very important to get 7-8 hours of sleep every day.
  • Do physical activity- Apart from yoga, you can also do other physical activities like walking, running or swimming.

Get involved in social activities – spend time with friends and family.

If the winter blues are bothering you a lot and you are not getting relief from the remedies mentioned above, then you should contact a doctor.
