March 30,Kathmandu.Office coffee acts as fuel for long meetings and long working hours in the office. Now coffee has become the lifeline of people in every office. But do you know that this coffee is not only taking away your sleep but is also increasing your cholesterol level.

According to a study published recently in the health journal 'Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease', the machines used to make coffee in most offices are increasing cholesterol levels. This can also increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

This study has been done jointly by Sweden's Uppsala University and Chalmers University of Technology. It has been found that the method of making coffee determines how much cholesterol can increase by drinking coffee. Generally, this risk is less in filter coffee.

Why does drinking coffee increase cholesterol?

If the coffee is not filtered, it contains diterpenes which can increase cholesterol. Usually, there is no filter coffee in the office. Therefore, there is a greater risk of increasing cholesterol by drinking coffee made from the office machine.

What are the harms of drinking too much coffee?

According to Dr., coffee made from the office coffee machine contains high amounts of diterpenes, which increase cholesterol. Therefore, it causes more harm. Whereas filter coffee is not that harmful. If any kind of coffee is consumed in excess, it can cause many harms.

Can drinking coffee increase the risk of heart disease?

According to a study published in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease, high intake of diterpene-rich coffee may increase the risk of heart disease. However, this depends on the type of coffee you drink.

If you drink unfiltered coffee such as espresso, French press or machine-brewed coffee throughout the day, your cholesterol levels may increase, which may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The right way and time to drink coffee

Generally, most people recommend drinking coffee in the morning. They are right too, because even after 12 to 14 hours of drinking coffee, caffeine remains present in the body and keeps the brain neurons active. Therefore, drinking too much coffee can affect brain activity.

Is it dangerous to drink coffee in the evening?

Dr. says that in certain circumstances, like before exams or to meet a deadline, it is okay to drink coffee occasionally at night, but in normal circumstances, one should not drink coffee after 4 pm because coffee consumed in the evening will also affect your sleep at night.

Avoid drinking coffee with milk

In India, there is a trend of drinking tea and coffee mixed with milk and sugar. But this is a wrong combination. When the calcium and lactose protein present in milk react with the caffeine and tannin of tea and coffee, they are harmful for our body. Due to this, we have problems of heartburn and gas.

Is it safe to drink coffee every day?

Yes, but in limited quantity. According to experts, taking 2-3 cups (up to 400mg caffeine) a day is considered safe. Taking more than this can cause problems like nervousness, rapid heartbeat, sleep problems and acidity.

Does coffee increase or decrease weight?

It depends on how you drink coffee. Black coffee is low in calories and helps burn fat by increasing metabolism, which can lead to weight loss. But if you add more sugar, cream, flavored syrups or full fat milk, the calories increase and there is a risk of weight gain.

Why does drinking coffee make you lose sleep?

Caffeine present in coffee is a natural stimulant, which keeps the mind alert and reduces melatonin i.e. the hormone required for sleep. This is the reason that even if you drink coffee 6 hours before sleeping, you do not get sleep till late at night.

Does coffee weaken bones?

Yes, this can happen if you drink too much coffee. Caffeine can reduce calcium absorption in the body, which can weaken bones and increase the risk of osteoporosis (bones become thin and weak). If you drink coffee, a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is necessary.

Can we drink coffee during pregnancy?

Yes, but in limited quantity (200mg i.e. 1 cup). Consuming too much caffeine during pregnancy can affect the development of the unborn baby, because caffeine reaches the fetus through the placenta. It can affect the heartbeat of the unborn baby. Therefore, doctors recommend drinking low-caffeine coffee or decaf coffee.
