February 5,Kathmandu.Whenever we talk about food, rice is definitely mentioned. Pasta also holds a special place in our kitchen. Both of these are very tasty and easily available foods. Both of these foods, which are liked by everyone, are prepared in many different ways.

Rice is a traditional and popular food, which has been a favorite food of humans for about ten thousand years. Pasta is also very much liked for its taste and has been in the kitchen of humans for more than a thousand years. However, if there is a question of choosing one of these two, you will quickly answer according to your choice.

But if the question is slightly changed and you are asked which is better for health between rice and pasta? Will you be able to answer? Most of us do not know whether eating rice or pasta is more beneficial for our health.

Usually, we eat whatever we get to fill our stomach. We rarely think about what is more beneficial for our health.

Pasta or rice?

Both rice and pasta are popular, but from a health point of view, brown rice is more beneficial. It contains more fiber, vitamins and minerals, which help in improving digestion. On the other hand, the glycemic index of white rice is 70. Eating it can increase blood sugar level. Rice can be harmful for diabetic patients.

While pasta made from wheat lacks nutrients, pasta prepared from multigrain or millets is healthy. If it is cooked with green vegetables, it also provides fiber, vitamins and many healthy nutrients. If you are health conscious, then multigrain pasta prepared with brown rice and green vegetables is a healthy option.

Carbohydrates

If your body needs more energy, then white rice or brown rice is a better option. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 100 grams of brown rice and white rice contain 78 grams of carbohydrates, while 100 grams of pasta contains 71.5 grams of carbs.

Fiber

Talking about fiber, 100 grams of multigrain pasta can contain more than 10 grams of fiber. Whereas 100 grams of brown rice contains 4 grams and white rice contains only 0.4 grams of fiber. In such a situation, pasta is a better option for a fiber rich diet.

Calories

There is not much difference in calories between brown rice and pasta. 100 grams of brown rice contains 360 calories, while regular pasta contains 357 calories.

Protein

In terms of protein, pasta is better than rice. If you are focusing on building muscles or participate in sports activities, then you should choose pasta. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 100 grams of multigrain pasta can provide 12.5 grams of protein, while brown rice contains 8 grams and white rice contains 2.5 grams of protein.

Other Healthy Nutrients

A 100 gram bowl of pasta contains calcium (36 mg), iron (3.21 mg) and magnesium (107 mg). However, 100 grams of brown rice contains more magnesium (120 mg) than pasta, while brown rice does not contain calcium.

Which pasta and rice is better for health?

Nutritionist and dietetics Dr.  says that due to being rich in fiber and protein, after eating multigrain pasta, the stomach feels full for a long time, which helps in controlling weight.

On the other hand, if you eat pasta made from finely ground flour, then it is harmful in every way. However, instead of eating pasta every day, it should be eaten at an interval of one day.

On the other hand, brown rice is gluten-free. In such a situation, it is a better diet for gluten sensitive people. Brown rice is easily digestible and is good for stomach health.

How to make rice and pasta healthy?

Rice and pasta can be made healthy by adding green vegetables and salad to it. For example, after cooking rice, you can add chopped coriander leaves to it. You can also fry it with cumin and ghee. With this, we can make rice healthy and tasty.

You can also cook pasta by adding green vegetables. Pasta with vegetables is not only delicious to eat but also beneficial for our health.

Here, there is a need to understand the basic science of nutrition. You may be eating pasta or rice as per your taste and health requirement, but basically it is a carb. Carbs are an important element for health, but carb alone is not enough. For balance, it is necessary to add other nutrients to it, which we get from beans, green vegetables and cruciferous vegetables.

So whether it is pasta or rice, if you eat it mixed with lots of vegetables and healthy fats then it is good for health.

For the rice

If you are preparing fried rice, then fry vegetables and tofu together. Add lentils and green vegetables to the rice bowl. If you are eating cooked rice, then you can eat it with milk and almonds. Also, you can try curd and rice for breakfast.

For the pasta

Make pasta salad for breakfast, add olive oil and fresh green vegetables to it. Capsicum, cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli and other vegetables can be added to pasta.

For protein, use pasta made from multigrain or gram flour. Apart from protein, many other nutrients are also available in multigrain pasta.

In this competition between rice and pasta, neither one is bad nor the other is better. This is their biggest quality. Even though they are not that healthy in their original form, but with a few changes we can make them healthy and tasty.

Both can be healthy if cooked properly and balanced with green vegetables and protein rich foods. The next time you eat rice or pasta, make it with a healthy twist.
