April 2,Kathmandu.Hair fall is a serious problem. This problem is increasing rapidly especially in women at a young age. There can be many reasons behind this, such as changing weather, dietary irregularities, stress, hormonal imbalance and gut health.

Therefore, if a woman's hair is falling rapidly, then instead of ignoring it, one should consult a doctor. If treated on time, hair fall can be stopped. Apart from this, with the right treatment, hair growth can be improved and hair can also become thicker.

What are the main reasons for hair fall in women at a young age?

Hair fall is a natural process in which some hair falls and new hair grows. The real problem comes when hair falls but new hair does not grow.

Trichologist and dermatologist Dr. Reshma T. Vishnani says that women face hair loss problem when they lose more than 125 hairs per day. There can be many reasons for hair loss.

What is the connection between poor gut health and hair loss?

Hair is made up of protein, water and some essential elements. The body needs many things for hair growth, such as hormones, minerals and vitamins. If the body lacks these things, then hair starts falling.

Whatever we eat, it gets broken down into smaller elements in the stomach and reaches the rest of the body. If there is any problem in digestion, it can cause hair loss.

Hair fall indicates deficiency of which nutrients?

Hair fall can be a sign of deficiency of some nutrients. Such as-

  • Iron deficiency (anemia) reduces the supply of oxygen to the scalp, causing hair to become weak and start falling.
  • Zinc deficiency can stunt hair growth and increase hair fall.
  • Hair is made up of a protein called keratin. If there is a lack of protein in the diet, the hair can become weak and fall out.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency affects blood circulation in the scalp, leading to hair fall.

Is it normal to have hair fall after pregnancy?

Answer- Dr. Reshma T. Vishnani says that hair fall after pregnancy is absolutely normal. This is called Telogen Effluvium. It mostly starts 2-4 months after delivery and becomes normal in about 6-12 months. However, if the hair fall increases or lasts for a long time, it is better to consult a doctor.

Can excessive heat styling or chemical treatment weaken the hair?

Yes, absolutely! This can cause hair breakage. Rebonding, smoothening, permanent straightening, perms and hair colouring contain hard chemicals, which alter the natural structure of the hair and weaken it. Apart from this, bleaching and hair dye can dry out the scalp and cause hair fall.

What is the connection between stress and hair fall?

Stress can play a big role in hair loss. It can cause problems like telogen effluvium, in which hair follicles go into a resting state early, and this leads to rapid hair loss. Apart from this, long-term stress can also aggravate problems like alopecia areata. This is a disease in which the body's immune system damages hair follicles, causing hair loss.

What effect does unhealthy eating have on hair?

Unhealthy eating has a direct effect on hair because the growth and strength of our hair depends on nutrients. If the diet is not right, then the hair can become weak and fall, become thin or lose its shine.

Which habits need to be changed to prevent hair fall?

If your hair is falling continuously, then you need to make some changes in your lifestyle and hair care routine. Hair can be strengthened by proper diet, good hair care and reducing stress.

What changes should be made in the diet to prevent hair fall?

For this, some necessary improvements are needed in your eating habits. Such as-

  • The structure of hair is mainly made up of protein. Therefore, definitely include protein in your diet. For this, eat cheese, tofu, pulses and nuts.
  • Eat green leafy vegetables to overcome iron deficiency.
  • Vitamin C protects hair from damage. So include vitamin C rich foods like orange, guava, lemon, strawberry and broccoli in your diet.
  • Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant for hair.
  • Zinc is an essential nutrient for hair health. It helps prevent hair loss.
  • Apart from this, drink adequate amount of water. This helps in maintaining hydration.
